EDF (Électricité de France)
World's Leading Nuclear Electricity Producer
EDF (Électricité de France) is a French state-owned multinational electric utility company headquartered in Paris. Founded in 1946 through the nationalization of French electricity producers, EDF is the world's largest electricity producer and operates the largest fleet of nuclear power plants globally with 56 reactors in France. The company is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, with 94% of its 2024 electricity production being decarbonized. EDF's operations span the entire energy value chain from generation to trading, transmission, and distribution.
Nuclear Fleet
EDF operates 56 nuclear reactors in France, making it the world's largest nuclear power plant operator. Nuclear energy is the cornerstone of the French energy mix, providing stable, low-carbon baseload electricity. In 2025, French nuclear output reached 373 TWh — the highest in six years.
Technical Specifications
EPR Technology
The EPR (European Pressurized Reactor) is EDF's third-generation reactor design with 1650 MWe output, four independent safety systems, double-walled containment, and a core catcher. Hinkley Point C in the UK is currently under construction using EPR technology. EDF is also developing the EPR2, an optimized design for easier and cheaper construction.
Hinkley Point C
Hinkley Point C is a 3.2 GWe nuclear power station under construction in Somerset, UK. It will be the first new nuclear power station in the UK in over 20 years, using two EPR reactors. The project is expected to provide 7% of the UK's electricity needs.
NUWARD SMR
NUWARD is EDF's Small Modular Reactor program, targeting 340 MWe output from twin reactor modules. EDF aims to have up to 30 NUWARD SMRs in service by 2050, with the design planned for completion in 2026. NUWARD targets markets that cannot accommodate large reactors.
Renewable Energy
EDF Renewables is a major player in the renewable energy sector with significant presence in onshore and offshore wind, solar, and hydropower. EDF is the leading operator of hydropower plants in the EU, with hydro providing flexible, dispatchable low-carbon electricity.
Technical Specifications
Enedis Distribution
Enedis, a wholly-owned subsidiary of EDF, manages the public electricity distribution network in 95% of mainland France. It operates, maintains, and develops the distribution grid, ensuring reliable delivery of electricity to millions of customers.
Technical Specifications
Hydrogen Strategy
EDF has identified low-carbon hydrogen as a key enabler for carbon neutrality. The company launched its Hydrogen Plan in 2022, aiming to develop 3 GW of electrolytic hydrogen projects worldwide by 2030. EDF's hydrogen strategy leverages its low-carbon electricity from nuclear and renewable sources for green hydrogen production.
Technical Specifications
Financial Performance
EDF reported strong financial results for 2025, with sales of €113.3 billion, EBITDA of €29.3 billion, and net income of €8.4 billion. The company achieved positive cash flow contributing to a reduction in net financial debt. S&P upgraded EDF's rating to BBB+ with stable outlook in January 2026.
